I loved you

You avoid eye contact as you tell me the truth. When you’re finished I search in your eyes for any sign of not being honest. But there is nothing, just empty blankness. I force myself to walk away from you.

I force myself to walk away from you. You grab my wrist, trying to hold me back. I look at you and the time stands still. Memories flash by. Our first talk down in the hallway in school. Our first date in the movies with that awful movie. Our first kiss under the old tree in your garden. The first time you said ‘I love you’ in the rain after we we’re at the beach. Our first fight. The first time you slammed the door and left me crying on the floor. The first time you called in the middle of the night to apologize. The first time I cried in your arms. The first time you admitted that you made a mistake.

The last time I cooked for you. The last time I cuddled with you. The last time you admitted that you made a mistake. Our last fight. The last time I said I love you.

I look into your eyes and talk to you the last time. “I loved you”
