Like a silhouette
frail and dark
the bare beeches reflect
their smooth bark
in the brown waters
 of a bit of ditch.
 
Dead leaves and roots
overrun with moss  surround
like a thick carpet
on the black muddy ground
the sluggish waters
where at a fallen branch they twitch.
 
Silent dreams the wood
unshaken by the light breeze
that comes from the north.
A squirrel gambols to seize
beech mast near the waters….
me to bewitch.
