Irene Beddies

The Letter

The Letter

Night stepped silent over the hill
and spread her star-embroidered cloth
across the sky
with sleep the dreamy world to fill.

A Candle sent its flickering ray
over the lines I had to write
at my table
after work of a troublesome day.

My glance went up from star to star,
bent to the struggling of a moth
to reach the flame and dy.
At last my look went almost far

inside to where remembrance lay hidden.
My hand turned to the paper white.
To write I felt now able
of things that to tell aloud were forbidden.
