Ingrid Baumgart-Fütterer

Rescue in Distress

Eating rolls with butter, cheese and ham
I leaned my head against a birch stem,
my biggest hunger was soon appeased,
I enjoyed the tasting of the "feast".

Slowly I proceeded munching my bread,
but then a question raced through my head
"where had been left the water bottle",
I had to quench the thirst of my throttle.

I could hardly swallow the breadcrumbs,
they glued at my palate like chewing-gums,
when I noticed a brook in the rear,
I luckily got a brilliant Idea.

I climbed downhill towards this narrow brook,
knelt down, moulded my hands like a scoop,
my mouth was enabled to drink well,
I banished my irksome thirst to hell.

Al long last the water filled my stomach
and disturbed my guts with a burbling whack,
suddenly I felt the twitching heartbeats
of thousands of frightened  water fleas.
