OF THE SONS OF CAIN

... into open battle, facing dogmas with their iron rings,
I will take my fear and my despair,
- and the tears of the final night -
and I will go out to seek
the light,
freedom,
I will wrest from death its power,
- the purest roses of our wounded gods -
and I will surrender my spirit to you in song,
and, thus, my bodies and my strength;
... there has been too much opacity, too much trembling
and deeds and exterminations against the gift of eyes:
that gaze that shelters and saves being, its ruins and its splendor;
... I must train myself in this profession of treading at every moment a river,
a twist of agony, a spineless sea, and live;
... these are the heavens I now institute,
that a blade of grass lights fire in my mouth. ***
