Dividing corridor

You called on me one last time.
Our eyes and lips met.
My heart was pounding,
Looking at your handsome face.
Hand in hand we left the room
Of the present
And walked along the corridor
To the future.
I unwillingly opened the door.
You held me tenderly in your arms
And I was choking back my tears.
I could feel my heart beating
Against your chest.
We shared a last, lingering kiss
And whispered our final “goodbye”.
Your car drove out of sight.
Trembling, I closed the door
On the past.
Acute loneliness befell me
In the timelessness of the corridor.
I hastened back towards the room,
Yearning for its soothing comfort
Of the present.
