Spring in Turkey

Spring in Turkey

Small horses made up with beads in their manes,
with bells on their harness and red rains
with neat little hooves and eyes fiery
pull painted carts elegantly and wiry
under the blue sky of Turkey.

Women - wrapped in their colourful frocks
covered with snow white shawls round their face -
are tending their fields and watch their flocks
sitting on doorsteps and spinning with grace
in the eternal sun of Turkey.

Blooming trees bear blossoms in yellow and pink
in their shade earnest men sit to chat and to drink.
The muezzin climbs the steps to the minarette
to call them to prayers from the tower’s parapet
below the snow covered peaks of Turkey.

Among broken columns friezes of fruit and mask
dream - gleaming in the middle of night -
the dreams of old when beyond daily tasks
gay people used to crowd in for delight
into the ancient temples of Turkey.
